Reception Learning Journey 2019/20

In September, the children quickly settled into school life. We spent a while getting to know our ‘golden rules’ and focussed on developing friendships through the story of the rainbow fish. We began our letters and sounds journey and enjoyed using our new sounds and tricky words in our independent writing. The children were very excited to get their first reading book and it has been great to see so many children achieving their 30 reads each half term.

One of the highlights of the Autumn term was going on our Autumn walk to Red Brow Wood and collecting leaves to make natural crowns back in class. We also took part in nursery rhyme week where we learnt 5 new nursery rhymes and performed them for our families. Soon it was Christmas time and we enjoyed celebrating together. The children blew us away with their Nativity performance!

We began the Spring term by exploring the text ‘the tiger who came to tea’. We made story maps and even made wanted posters after we found tiger footprints in the classroom! In maths, we have explored a variety of different mathematical methods, such as drawing a picture or using a ten frame to help us work out the answer to a problem. Over the year, we have enjoyed learning about celebrations from a range of cultures, such as Diwali and Chinese New Year. The children were keen to try some Chinese food and write their own fortune cookie messages. Later on in the Spring term we learnt about space, following the children’s interest in this topic. We linked our learning about the solar system with the book ‘aliens love underpants’ which was a firm favourite!

Despite the challenges of this unusual year, we have had a fantastic time in Reception and we are so proud of all the children and their achievements.
