Year 3’s Learning Journey - Autumn 2018
During the Autumn term, we focused our English on the books ‘Stone Age Boy.’ and ‘How to Wash A Woolly Mammoth’. We completed Wargrave units on instructions, and a diary entry based on fiction. We had great fun following instructions on how to make a woolly mammoth out of plastic bottles and we washed and cleaned dirty animals. We also followed instructions on how to play new games such as Giant Jenga and Twister.
In the last two weeks of term, we had a visit from Jam the dinosaur. The children were very excited and we spent the next two weeks finding out lots of amazing facts about the T-Rex and we recorded this in a non-chronological report.
We launched our ‘Pour over a book’ reading area in the form of a café. A mystery book was wrapped up and displayed with only the blurb showing. The children have loved sitting in the area reading, but also enjoyed writing reasons why they should win the mystery book.
We began Singapore Maths in September. The children have loved investigating and exploring different methods to solve problems using apparatus. So far, we have focused our learning on place value and addition and subtraction with renaming.
We also have introduced Times Tables Rock Star and each child has been given their own log in so they can use it to practice at home. We are seeing rapid progress in knowledge of times table facts.
In topic, we have focused our learning about living in the Stone Age. We started by having a camp fire and cooking using wooden sticks and this was followed by a walk into the woods where the children had to make a shelter for our bear.
Our theme in RE was ‘Called by God’. We studied different stories from the bible where God spoke to different people e.g. Moses, Jonah and the whale and The Rich Man. We compared these stories to our own lives and thinking about our own responsibilities.
In science we looked at Rocks and Soil. We found out the names of the three main types of rocks and how they are formed. We made rocks using biscuits, marshmallows and chocolate!
